New scroll direction in OS X Lion

Posted on July 20, 2011

If, like me, you’re downloading and installing OS X Lion today then you’ll notice they’ve changed scroll direction so it matches iOS. On your current set up when you swipe down or scroll down, the content of the page will move upwards – the opposite of what happens in iOS.

This feels extremely weird at first but that’s only because you’re going against what you’re used to, not necessarily used to doing what is actually correct. Think about it, what do you want to control when you scroll? Content, or the scroll bar itself?

With the new scroll direction you are controlling the content. When you scroll up, the content moves up, when you scroll left the content moves left – ignore what the scroll bar is doing (if I could, I’d turn mine off).

FYI, I’ve been using the Snow Leopard application ScrollReverse for a week now so I could get used to it.

Stick with it. You will like it. It will make sense after 15 minutes.
