Films in 2011

Posted on January 2, 2012

I like to think of 2011 as the year I really started to appreciate cinema. It started at the end of 2010 when I started really listening to peoples’ opinions about certain films that I would never have watched otherwise – masterpieces like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Twelve Angry Men and Annie Hall. Basically, I have a lot of catching up to do.

If you have any recommendations please let me know! I’m also sticking all the films I’ve watched and own on Letterboxd, so you should add me.

* If I could make this extra bold I would. But it wouldn’t be very legible.

You have been missing so much mate, but a great list you have seen in 2011. I’m much the same, making more of an effort to see some of the older films that people recommend.

I have had the Godfather trilogy on blu-ray for 2 years and its still in the wrapper.

You should watch The Godfather, it’s brilliant. I’ve heard a lot of good things about The Godfather Part II but I’m yet to watch it. It’s 3 hours long which is a lot of dedication. I’m sure as soon as I start watching it it’ll draw me in like Apocalypse Now Redux did.

May I recommend the Italian film ‘Life is Beautiful’? An excellent, if somewhat unorthodox, film about the extremes a man will go to in order to protect his child’s innocence in the darkest of circumstances. It is quite simply superb.

Thanks Andrew, I’ll give it a go!

If you like mystery/thrillers with awesome twists I’d recommend Memento (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209144/) and Cypher (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284978/). Also, I once went to the cinemas and picked a film I knew nothing about to go watch – Gattaca (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119177/) turned out to be pretty damn awesome! :)

Nice list. You should give “Lost in Translation” a go, basically any Woody Allen movie (they’re all quite alike) especially “Midnight in Paris”. It’s brilliant, and I say that as an Owen Wilson hater. If you have a bottle of wine and a girl around make sure to see “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, but watch out – if you watch it alone, you might not be sure where to put that sexual energy. Catch up on the two Batman movies, the trilogy is coming to an end this year and “The Dark Knight” is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen (not so much because of Ledger but because of the great storyplay). “Prime” is amusing, Meryl Streep is a hell of a woman. There’s more, but with movies it’s always the same: if you think about your favorite ones, they never come to mind. Except for that one: Into the Wild. That movie takes you on a ride, emotionally similar to Drive. Enjoy!

Thanks for the comment, Hannes! I actually watched Midnight in Paris at the beginning of the year; it was a fantastic movie.

I’ve added Lost in Translation and Vicky Victoria Barcelona to the list of movies I need to watch (it’s up to about a hundred now, gulp) – so thanks for the recommendation! I’ll make sure to watch the latter with my girlfriend haha.

I watched The Dark Knight and Batman Begins towards the end of last year, so I probably won’t watch them before the new movie comes out. They’re amazing, but I have a pretty good memory and so little time over the next few months it wouldn’t surprise me if I didn’t get the chance!

Funny you should suggest Into The Wild, I have that and I’ve been thinking about it a lot… I just haven’t had a chance to sit down and watch it. Perhaps I’ll have a relax this evening and watch it.
